Check to see if property tax assessment can be reduced
Reducing your property tax assessment could save you money in reduced tax payments
Timing: June (every 3 years)
Check the Internet, newspaper, real estate listings, etc. to see if the market values of properties in your area have come down. You can also check tax records at your City or Town Hall for valuations around your neighborhood.
If your believe that values indeed have come down, then contact your local tax assessor about re-evaluating and lowering your property tax assessment. Be careful, however.
If in fact your property values haves gone up since your last assessment, you could end up being assessed a higher value.
The benefits of this task can be high if housing prices have been going down, but can work against you if housing prices have been going up.
The cost of this task is very low. It is estimated that this task should only take about 30 minutes to complete, and the task is relatively easy to do.
